Amazon listing optimization checklist for a rewrite
Optimization, here, means rewriting the listing so a shopper can tell what the product is, what it is not, and whether it will fit their bag, car, or shelf. It does not mean a rank plan. If someone sells you a checklist that “gets you to page one,” close the tab.
Work top to bottom. Do not start in A+ because A+ cannot rescue a 200-character stuffed title. The companion piece on titles and bullets covers field limits in more depth. The sample ASIN Pack shows a finished pass on a fictional bottle.
1. Gather facts before you touch Seller Central
- Open the live public page in a logged-out browser. Copy the current title, bullets, and description into a plain-text file so you can diff later.
- Measure the product. Base width, packed size, count, wattage, fabric weight — whatever shoppers argue about in 2-star reviews. If you do not have the number, do not write the number.
- List claims you will not make (hour-count insulation, medical outcomes, “unbreakable”).
- Read the public 1–3 star reviews on this ASIN only. Cluster them into five themes. Those themes become bullets and image briefs. Do not quote reviewers. Do not invent testimonials.
- Note variation logic: which children share copy, which must mention size or color in the title.
2. Title and Item Highlights
- Rewrite the title to about 75 characters: brand, product type, one differentiator, color or size if it is the child’s identity.
- Read it out loud. If you need a breath, it is too long.
- Fill Item Highlights (~125 characters) with facts the title dropped: lid type, pack count, a key measurement.
- Strip promotional language, competitor names, and shipping claims.
3. Five bullets
- Assign each bullet a job: return-risk, dimension, mechanism, care/compatibility, materials.
- Lead with a short benefit, then a colon, then a proof (a measurement or a mechanism).
- Stay inside 10–255 characters per bullet and near 1,000 bytes for the set.
- Delete any line that could be pasted onto a competitor’s listing unchanged.
4. Description
- Assume a 2,000-character cap in the plain-text product-description field. Count visible text, not your feelings.
- If you keep an HTML block for A+ or an older field, use Amazon-safe tags only:
p,b,ul,li. - Include in-the-box, what it is not for (freezer, carbonation, dishwasher — if true), and care. This is where you prevent returns without stuffing the title.
- Do not repeat the five bullets verbatim. Add the operational detail bullets could not hold.
5. Backend search terms
- 249 bytes on US. Spaces, not commas.
- No words already in the title, bullets, or description — Amazon has said leftover terms are for leftovers.
- No competitor brands, no subjective superlatives, no ASINs.
- Use ordinary synonyms and use-cases you honestly skipped on the visible page (“canteen,” “nurse,” “cupholder” as a closed compound only if it is not already visible).
6. A+ copy (if you have Brand Registry)
- Three Standard Image & Text modules is enough for most commodity SKUs. Headlines under 160 characters; bodies short enough to read on a phone without scrolling inside the module.
- Each module should match an image brief: cutaway, in-use, care. Do not write “premium lifestyle” as a headline.
- Do not put ranking language or review scores in A+. Amazon will reject it, and it would be a promise you cannot keep.
7. Images (briefs, even if you are not the photographer)
- Main: white background, product only, fill the frame, lid on / assembled the way it ships. No badges.
- One infographic with facts only — the same measurements you used in bullets. No “best.”
- One image that proves the return-risk claim (bottle in a bag, base in a cup holder, garment on a body with a tape).
- One exploded or care image if smell, mold, or assembly shows up in reviews.
You do not need new photography to rewrite copy. You do need briefs so the next shoot is not a guess. ASIN Pack includes those briefs.
8. Attributes and downstream checks
- Fill the category attributes that match the title (size, color, count, material). Inconsistent attributes make the words look like a lie.
- After you paste, view the listing logged out on a phone. Check truncation. Check that the first image is still compliant.
- Do not expect a rank movement from a copy paste. If ads, stock, or price changed the same day, you will not know what the words did.
A compact order of operations
- Facts and review themes
- Title → Highlights → bullets
- Description and backend terms
- A+ and image briefs
- Attributes, paste, mobile check
If you want someone else to run that order on one ASIN, Gristlane’s ASIN Pack is $129, emailed in 24 hours, with one revision. A Listing Audit is $49 if you only want the punch list.
Paste-ready rewrite of one Amazon listing. No call. No Seller Central login.
